GRE preparations

Getting oneself enrolled in one of the best universities of the world is never going to be an easy task for any student. It is extremely important to prepare for the test in an organized manner. Following are few of the guidelines they may help students to prepare:

1) Understand the structure of the test: It is extremely important to understand what types of questions are asked in the exam. If comparisons are asked then one need not to go for heavy calculations but minute logical reasoning can lead to answer. If one can save time in comparisons then that can help in doing other sums. Knowing the words well in the verbal section can save lot amount of time which can be utilized while trying to solve the Reading Comprehension section. Thus, understanding the time to be allocated on average to each of the question along with making intelligent guesses wherever required is paramount. Also once marked it is not possible to make changes need to keep in mind since that is the structure and stubborn part of the real GRE test.

2) Start collecting Preparation material :

    a) Online material: Many sites provide guidance and help to students preparing for the examination free of cost .Certain downloadable materials such as wordlists as well as mathematics basic formulas can be of great help. Software that can help in increasing and building ones vocabulary can act as an e-tutor.

 

    b) Offline material: This is being done as per convenience. Barron’s and Kaplan’s along with Big Book has always been the favorite of the students through out the preparation time. Also students not from engineering background and one who have problem with mathematics do join some of the coaching institutes either online or offline and that give them insight and guidance on how to solve problems.

 

3) Prepare a working Plan: It all depends upon the time left for the test date. Still considering average time of 3 months prior to the test the following generalized template can help student to proceed for the preparation:

    a) 2 hours for verbal

     

    b) 2 hours for Quant

     

    c) 1 hour for AWA

     

Total: 5 hours per day with more on weekends.

4) Take more practice tests: It is extremely important to get used to the test taking platform before taking the real test. Many online tests are conducted which help student to know how to use time and how to submit their answers. It also gives them a feeling of experience so that they don’t have fresh software to use on the real day.

Practice tests help the following way:

    a) Allocate time for each type of question
      • b) Familiarity with the test flow and structure
        c) Understand how much average score obtained on each test and consequently preparing for the real test.
