What to study?
Students go to college to acquire a degree. The degree is acquired in one specific field known as “major”. The undergraduate students do not need to choose the major before they are admitted; they are required to choose major only at the end of second year. It is always better to take a decision about which area you would like to study before you make a move to your new college. Even the decision of choosing the college must be based on your area of interest. This way you can choose schools that not only offer that subject as a major, but which also have strong programs in that subject. The choice must be made very carefully as some institutions have highly reputable programs in some areas while it may not have same reputation in other subjects. Choose that college only which has got good academic record for the subject you are interested in.
Also, some schools may have a strong undergraduate program in a specific field, but a weak graduate program. Students should not worry if they are not aware or sure about what subjects to choose. Many American students start their first year of college “undeclared;” in other words, with no selected major. For these kinds of students it is a good choice to choose liberal arts college. These colleges offer a broad selection of majors that will probably attract you in future. They also offer subjects that are required for graduation. These subjects further help you in selecting a major in your second year.
